How to Care for Your Gold and Diamond Jewellery
Fine jewellery is made to be worn and enjoyed — and with a little care, it will look beautiful for generations. These simple habits make all the difference.
Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, hair spray, lotions and make-up can leave a film on gold and dull a diamond’s sparkle. Put your jewellery on after getting ready, and take it off before bathing, swimming, exercising or cleaning.
Cleaning at home
- Soak the piece in warm water with a few drops of mild soap for 15–20 minutes.
- Gently brush around settings with a very soft toothbrush.
- Rinse in clean water (close the sink drain first!).
- Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach and abrasive powders — they can damage gold and some gemstones. Pearls, emeralds and other delicate stones need extra-gentle care: simply wipe them with a soft, dry cloth.
Store pieces separately
Diamonds can scratch other jewellery — and each other. Keep each piece in its own pouch or a lined box compartment, and fasten chains so they do not tangle.
Check your settings
Daily wear can loosen prongs over time. If a stone moves or a clasp feels weak, stop wearing the piece and have it checked.
