18KT vs 22KT Gold: Which Is Right for Your Diamond Jewellery?
When you buy diamond jewellery, the gold is not just the background — it decides the colour, strength and price of the piece. The two purities you will see most often are 18KT and 22KT. Here is how they compare.
What the numbers mean
- 22KT gold is 91.6% pure gold (hallmarked 22K916).
- 18KT gold is 75% pure gold (hallmarked 18K750), alloyed with metals such as copper and silver for strength.
Both are BIS hallmarked, so you always know the purity you are paying for. Learn more in our guide on how to read a BIS hallmark.

Strength and settings
Diamonds are held by tiny prongs and settings. Because 18KT gold is harder, it grips stones firmly and keeps fine details crisp, which is why most diamond jewellery — rings, studs and pendants — is made in 18KT. 22KT is softer and works best in designs with closer, protective settings.
Colour
22KT has a deep, warm yellow that is classic in Indian jewellery. 18KT has a slightly lighter, brighter tone that makes white diamonds look especially crisp.
Price
Since 22KT contains more pure gold, it costs more per gram than 18KT. In diamond jewellery, though, the diamonds and craftsmanship are usually a large part of the price. Check today's gold rates for both purities.
Which should you choose?
| 18KT | 22KT | |
|---|---|---|
| Pure gold | 75% | 91.6% |
| Strength | Harder, ideal for daily wear | Softer, best for occasion wear |
| Colour | Bright, lighter yellow | Rich, deep yellow |
| Best for | Rings, studs, fine settings | Traditional designs, close settings |
For pieces you will wear every day, 18KT is usually the practical choice. If you love a traditional colour or are matching other 22KT jewellery, 22KT is a beautiful option. Browse our diamond pendants and diamond jewellery in both purities.
