How to Read a BIS Hallmark: A Simple Guide to Buying Gold Jewellery
When you buy gold jewellery in India, the most important detail is often the smallest: the BIS hallmark. It is your assurance that the purity stated on your bill is the purity you are wearing.
What is a BIS hallmark?
Hallmarking is the certification of the purity of precious metal by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Hallmarked gold has been tested at a BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre before it reaches you.
The three marks to look for
- The BIS logo — the triangular BIS standard mark.
- Purity grade — the karat and fineness, for example 22K916 (91.6% gold), 18K750 (75% gold) or 14K585 (58.5% gold).
- HUID — a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification code given to each piece.
How to verify a piece
You can check a HUID using the official BIS CARE app — enter the code to see the details recorded for that article. It is a quick way to confirm that the piece and its purity match what you were told.
Quick buying checklist
- Check the hallmark with a magnifier before you pay.
- Make sure the purity on the bill matches the purity grade stamped on the piece.
- Ask for a bill that shows the gold weight, purity, making charges and GST separately.
- Compare against today’s gold rate for that purity — see our live metal rates.
